1. Introduction

Ember PDF ("we", "us", "our") operates the Ember PDF browser extension and the website at emberpdf.com. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the rights you have over it. It covers both the extension and the website.

2. Information We Collect

Your documents are not collected. Every PDF operation in Ember PDF, including merging, splitting, extracting, rotating, resizing, compressing, converting and text extraction, runs entirely inside your own browser on your own device. Your files are never uploaded, transmitted, stored or seen by us or by any third party. There is no server component that processes documents.

We do collect a limited set of technical and attribution data:

Installation and lifecycle events. When the extension is installed, activated, or uninstalled, and periodically while installed, it sends an event to our servers. These events record the extension name, extension identifier, version number, event name, and a randomly generated installation identifier and session identifier.
Technical information. Browser name and version, and an approximate country code derived from the network request.
Attribution data. If you arrived at the extension through a marketing link, a set of referral parameters (such as source and campaign identifiers) may be recorded so we can understand which channels lead to installations.
Website data. Standard web server information when you visit emberpdf.com, and analytics on our own pages relating to installs and uninstalls.

What we never collect: the content, names or metadata of your PDF or image files; your name, postal address or phone number; payment or financial information; your browsing history; the contents of pages you visit; or your search queries.

3. How We Use Your Information

To operate, maintain and improve the extension.
To count active installations and understand which features and versions are in use.
To understand how users find and install the extension, through attribution data.
To diagnose faults and respond to support requests you send us.

Legal basis under the GDPR. We process installation, technical and attribution data on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating and improving the extension and measuring its distribution. Where the extension asks you for consent before enabling a feature, that processing is carried out on the basis of your consent, which you may withdraw at any time by uninstalling the extension or changing the relevant setting.

4. Cookies and Tracking

The extension and website use cookies on our own domains to store an attribution and installation identifier, so that an install can be matched to the referral that produced it, and to remember choices you make on the website such as your cookie banner selection. Lifecycle events are sent using standard web requests for a tracking image.

We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles, and we do not track you across other websites.

You can block or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings. In Firefox this is under Settings, then Privacy and Security. Blocking cookies does not affect the PDF tools, which work regardless.

5. We Do Not Sell Your Personal Data

We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise disclose your personal information to third parties for money or other valuable consideration. We have not done so in the preceding twelve months. This statement is made for the purposes of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the CPRA.

6. Data Retention

Installation and event records are retained for as long as is necessary to produce aggregate usage statistics, and are deleted or aggregated beyond identification thereafter. Correspondence you send to our support address is retained for as long as needed to resolve your query and to keep a record of it.

Because your documents are never transmitted to us, there is nothing of that kind to retain or to delete. To request deletion of the limited data described above, write to support@emberpdf.com.

7. Your Rights

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom (GDPR)

Right of access. You may ask what personal data we hold about you and receive a copy of it.
Right to rectification. You may ask us to correct data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
Right to erasure. You may ask us to delete personal data we hold about you.
Right to restrict processing. You may ask us to limit how we use your data in certain circumstances.
Right to data portability. You may ask to receive your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
Right to object. You may object to processing carried out on the basis of our legitimate interests.

To exercise any of these rights, contact support@emberpdf.com. We are not required to appoint a Data Protection Officer; the same address is our contact point for all data matters. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

If you are a California resident (CCPA)

Right to know. You may request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you.
Right to delete. You may request that we delete personal information we collected from you, subject to legal exceptions.
Right to correct. You may request correction of inaccurate personal information.
Right to opt out of sale or sharing. Not applicable, because we do not sell or share your personal information.
Right to non-discrimination. We will not deny you service, charge you a different price, or provide a different level of quality because you exercised any of these rights.

8. Third-Party Services

Mozilla Add-ons (AMO). The extension is distributed through addons.mozilla.org. Mozilla independently collects data relating to downloads and updates under its own privacy notice.
Our own endpoints. Installation, heartbeat and uninstall events are sent to servers we operate on our own domain.
Search provider. The extension can set its search provider to search.emberpdf.com. When you search using it, your query is sent to that service and its upstream search partner in order to return results. This is only ever enabled through the prompt your browser shows at install time, which you are free to decline.
Contact form. Messages sent through the website contact form are delivered by a third-party form-forwarding service, which processes the name, email address and message you supply.

These services operate under their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to read. We are not responsible for their practices.

9. Children's Privacy

Ember PDF is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact support@emberpdf.com and we will delete it.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date shown at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension or website after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
